A Systematic Review of Walking Program for Older Adults

Abstract

|
Objective : This study presents a systematic review that examine the effects of walking programs on healthy older adults; we confirm effect on health promotion in the elderly and we would like to suggest the need to d evelop a walking program for the eld erly.
Methods : Research questions, the technical form of systematic literature review, were established based on the PICO-S framework. This systematic review 1,563 studies were collected through search engines using and excluded 1,551 studies in accordance with the inclusion and exclusion criteria and the final 12 studies were selected.
Results : The evaluation of the quality of the final literature presented a result suitable for the purpose of the study as the risk of bias was low. As a physical activity suitable for the elderly, it was confirmed that the gait program satisfies all areas of functional health, chronic disease prevention and risk reduction, psychological health, and social performance that affect the elderly health.
Conclusion : Based on the research results, it is necessary to develop a walking program for the healthy elderly as a practical study to solve social problems occurring in an aged society. In addition, a walking program for the elderly that can improve social relations and prevent chronic diseases, cognitive decline, and depression should be developed to suit the physical environment of Korea, taking into account the impact on the health promotion of the elderly in Korea.
